Homemade Fly Trap Bait: The summer and beginning of fall bring a lot of great things like fresh garden food, pool parties, and all those awesome BBQs. It also brings flies. I don’t think there is anything in this world more annoying than flies. Here in Idaho, we have had weeks of HOT weather, which is perfect for these little guys to keep multiplying!

I have purchased hanging fly traps in the past and they do work. However, I was having to buy them almost twice a week. So I started researching ways to make my own homemade fly trap with items I already had around the house. This saves money and keeps me from having to make another trip to the store.

The word “flies” isn’t regularly preceded by the word “pesky” for nothing. They’ve gained their bad reputation honestly. Having these irritating flying pests land on your food isn’t just annoying, it’s a chance to get sick. Fight back by making a fly trap to lure them away from your patio, deck, and garden all summer long.

Making a Bottle Fly Trap

This can be one that is used, or simply pour out the soda. Make sure that all the soda has been removed and that it has been washed out with warm water and remove the cap.
Poke a hole through the bottle using one of the blades on the scissors. Do this right where the funnel of the soda bottle ends, and where the large shaft begins (near the middle of the bottle)
Flip the cut piece over. Stick it into the bottom half of the bottle. If you cut close enough to the edge of the funnel, it should stick inside as you slide it in.
The simplest and most effective way is to staple the edges together. Simply staple three or four times around the bottle, equidistant from one another
Create a melted sugar mixture. Pour five tablespoons of sugar into a pot. Place the pot on a stovetop. Flatten the sugar so that it lies evenly across the bottom of the pot.
Spoon the liquid into the funneled end of the bottle. Try to drip it down the edges of the funnel so that when the flies come towards the funnel, they will stick right from the start.

An empty plastic bottle of some sort—a soda, juice, or water bottle of any size.
Something to cut with, such as scissors or a sharp knife.
Some tape—duct or packaging tape works best, but even Scotch tape will do.
And finally, you need some bait to attract flies. See the list of ideal fly baits below.

Now you’re ready to assemble your trap.

First, cut off the top of the bottle. Be sure to cut the widest section of the bottle, so when you invert the upper lid, it will fit without falling in.
Fill the bottom half of the bottle with a few inches of bait mixed with liquid.
Invert the top half of the bottle and rest it on the bottom half.
Tape around the outer edge to hold it in place and make sure the flies can’t crawl out.

Homemade Fly Trap Vinegar Sugar

Combine the sugar and vinegar in the glass jar. Add 1/4 cup of water. Put the lid on the jar and twist it until it is secure.
Shake the contents until the sugar dissolves. Remove the lid.
Add enough water to fill the jar half full.
Pound the nail through the lid to make several (five to seven) evenly spaced holes in the lid. Each hole should be large enough to allow a fly to enter the jar through the holes. A housefly trap will require much larger holes than a trap intended to capture fruit flies.
Screw the lid back on the jar. Flies will be attracted by the scent of the vinegar solution and will go into the jar but will not be able to get out.

Homemade House Fly Trap

A basic homemade fly trap works on two facts:

Flies get attracted to food by their sense of smell, they are 10 million times more sensitive to sugar than the human tongue.
Flies have compound eyes, this means that they have a very bad vision but they can detect movements and changing light patterns very well.

Based on the above facts, a fly trap basically consists of a container containing a fly attractant with a small hole on the top. The attractant attracts the flies and following the scent flies enter into the container through the hole. Once they are inside the container, they cannot move out as they have poor eyesight and thus are trapped inside the container.

How Do You Attract Flies To A Trap?

Make a trap using a glass jar and plastic wrap.

Take your glass jar and fill it almost to the top with sugar water or a solution of sugar dissolved in apple cider vinegar with a squirt of dish soap.
Take a square of plastic wrap and use it to cover the opening of the glass jar.

How Do You Catch Flies With Vinegar?

Get ready: All it takes is cider vinegar, a jar, dish soap, and plastic wrap. Pour just enough cider vinegar to cover the bottom of the jar. Add a drop of dish soap (it will break the surface tension of the vinegar so the fruit flies can’t just sit atop the liquid).

The most common reason for flies swarming all over your house is an infestation inside or nearby your home. If you suddenly see a swarm of flies that means dozens of eggs have already hatched and developed into flies. The source is likely inside your house, garage, attic or garden.
